Causes and Targets of Human Trafficking

According to ILO (International Labour Organization) studies, nowadays there are 21 million of enslaved human beings. Most of them are exploited in the private economy, as state-imposed forced labour is rapidly declining due to the development of legislation and politics. In the former case, most of the times forced labour is strictly linked to organized crime. More than half is made of girls and women working as prostitutes and domestic workers, the remaining percentage is made of enslaved men working in the construction industry, in mines or in agriculture.

The roots of this problem are to be found in social and in economic issues, such as income shocks, poverty, gender discrimination, lack of education and/or opportunities and migration.
