On your way to Lampedusa...

"Imagine carrying your baby into a windowless metal box, your elderly mother at your side. Imagine the door closing behind you, leaving you and your family in total darkness..."

This is the impressive start of a beautiful and informative article written by James Kirkup on The Telegraph in October 2014.

With over 3000 migrant fatalities, Europe is the most dangerous destination for irregular migration in the world, according to a new survey from the International Organization for the Migration (IOM).

This problem has been increasing more and more in the last few years. The report informs that hundreds of migrants have died while fleeing along the routes of the Middle East and North Africa because of the rickety smugglers’ ships. Researchers collated previously scattered data on migrant deaths since 2000 and settled on a conservative count of 40000 victims worldwide.

These people are driven to leave their home countries due to limited opportunities to find a job to maintain their families, or to run away from situations of war or religious persecutions. In all of these cases, they are human beings in the need of protection and assistance and they diserve respect.

Europe is the nearest nation to the violent conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa, which account for many of the world’s 51 million refugees. More than 3 million people have fled Syria’s civil war since it erupted in 2011, and the Islamic state (IS) continues to drive out thousands more from Syria as well as Iraq.
